Weld County Oil and Gas

Weld County Oil and Gas© Prairie Mountain Publishing 2015.

A couple of weeks ago I drove out to Weld County to shoot some of the many oil and gas drilling operations, wells and machinery that has sprung up across the front range. I was looking to create some iconic images that could be used to illustrate upcoming stories about the industry and issues surrounding it. I also wanted to include a piece of the geography that would link it to my coverage area. Enjoy.

2013 was a rough year. I sat at a desk more than I should have and shot less than I wanted. It’s always tough to decide which photos accurately sum up a year of work. Rodeo Returns to the Boulder County Fair in Longmont

RODEO 1© MediaNews Group 2013/Times-Call 2013

The rodeo returned to the Boulder County Fair last night. It was the first time I had shot a rodeo since I left my last job in Evergreen. It felt good to be back in the arena. I was a little nervous about shooting in a venue that I had little experience with. The thing about covering the same rodeos year after year is that you get a really good sense for how the events run and where you should be for each event to make the best picture. I struggled a little bit with some events last night due to the fact that the arena had livestock pens on 3 sides. It makes it difficult to find the right position when you physically can’t be in the place you would want to be. Overall it was a good time and I made a few decent photos throughout the night. Next year will be better based on the experience I gained. Enjoy.

On Sunday, June 2, 2013 my alarm went off at 5AM. I was headed to Frederick to follow a hot air balloon pilot from take off to landing. This was a photo essay I had been wanting to work on for some time. I was interested in finding a pilot who was passionate about flying and it took some time to find a source that wasn’t a commercial pilot.  When I did finally find some one, I found exactly the person I needed.
