State Cross Country Remote Camera Outakes
© Matthew Jonas 2011/Evergreen Newspapers 2011
I set a remote camera during every race I had to cover at the 2011 CHSAA State Cross Country Championships this year. I had some success and a few failures. Speaking of failures (WARNING: Rant Approaching), CHSAA has once again made covering the finish line nearly impossible for photographers. They continue to insist on having non essential personnel clogging the finish line. It is the most disorganized event I cover each year. I dread having to cover it. I know I’m not alone in this respect. (Rant over) Anyway here are a few select pictures from my remote along with some explanations.
Mr. EHS Competition Rehearsal

Last week I stopped by the Mr. Evergreen High School competition rehearsal to make a few pictures. The lighting in the auditorium at EHS is abysmal. It’s something like ISO 6400, f2.8 at 1/30th in the bright spots. Even with the tough lighting conditions I managed to make a few frames that I liked. Click through for a few more. Thanks for looking.

Festivals, Festivals and More Festivals

As much as I end up disliking festivals by the end of the summer, there are some good pictures to be made.

July 4th Fireworks in Idaho Springs

Tonight I tried a little light painting with an LED flashlight during fireworks. I hadn’t shot fireworks in Idaho Springs before so it was a complete crap shoot. I made a couple of frames I liked, one of which is above. Not a complete failure. And now finally, I am off work.
Thunder Valley Motocross

What a weekend! I almost forgot how much fun it is to cover motor sports. I definitely didn’t forget how much work it is. Last weekend was the annual Thunder Valley stop on the AMA circuit. The track is unique for the circuit and presents challenges for the riders. Carved out of the side of the foothills at 6000+ feet in elevation, it is unlike any other. Both riders and bikes had to be adjusted to the conditions. It was clear that some of the traveling press were having trouble adjusting too. More than once, I caught a few photographers sitting outside the track sucking wind and drinking water like they had just finished a 5k. I have to admit that toward the end of the day that I was starting to feel a little winded as well. Covering motocross at Thunder Valley entails a lot of hiking up and down the side of a mountain. That combined with the 95 degree heat, the unique smell of dirt bike exhaust and the lack of shade make for a tough day. Even with all of the obvious challenges I still had a blast. Here’s a collection of photos that I made during the weekend. Enjoy.
