2011 CHSAA State Wrestling: Day 3 Finals

After 2 days, only one of the schools in our coverage area had a grappler in the finals. Conifer High School’s Travis Himmelman wrestled Valor Christian High School’s Torey Welch in the Class 4A 145lbs final match. Much to my surprise (sarcasm) Himmelman, with a 37-1 record going into state, once again destroyed the competition and claimed a third state title in 4 years. It made for some good pictures and probably the cover of the High Timber Times this week.

Not everything was good throughout the weekend though. An increasing trend seems to be credentialing MWCs (moms with cameras) to state events. The sidelines were extremely crowded during the finals. Although I have only covered state wrestling for 4 years, I have never seen as many photographers as I did this year. I actually overheard “I’m just a mom with a camera,” that proved my suspicions about the number of “media” at the event. I saw at least 20 people that fell into the MWC category last night. It’s starting to become a problem.

2011 CHSAA State Wrestling: Day 2

So much for not shooting things super tight like I did yesterday. This one just stood out to me as a good opportunity to fill the frame. Finding a clean background is extremely tough at the Pepsi Center. Shooting tight is pretty much the only solution. I moved from press row into the Denver Nuggets photo room today. You can see a photo after the jump. It’s much quieter and easier for me to come and go from. The internet seems to be faster as well. Most of the bandwidth is being used by the CHSAA TV people who are live streaming the matches. It’s become a problem for anyone else trying to file on a deadline.

2011 CHSAA State Wrestling: Day 1

Off to an interesting start. The first match I was supposed to photograph was over before it started. Due to a questionable medical call, a 3A heavy weight wrestler from Clear Creek High School was disqualified. I’m not a doctor but to me the injury in question was nothing but mat burn. The medical personnel for CHSAA though it might have been something more serious. It’s tough break for the kid, who is a senior, and will now miss his last opportunity to wrestle.

Man, what a game! Evergreen pulls off a win after being absolutely destroyed by Conifer last year. The annual Mountain Bowl was held last weekend between cross town rivals Evergreen High School and Conifer High School. The weather was perfect. The action was intense. I had a great time documenting the game.

The Plane in the Barn

If you live in Colorado and have traveled the 285 corridor, you probably have seen the plane in the barn. Over the years it has become a landmark to the community and to many who have passed by while heading south on HWY 285. It was a sad day in Conifer on Sunday. More than 300 people came out to watch the plane in the barn make its final flight.  Its owner, Norman Meyer, has become unable to fly because he is now 94 years old (or 93 depending on which day you talk to him). The 1968 Cessna 180 will stay in his family but no longer reside at the ranch. Meyer said that he hopes that it will come back to visit someday. For the full story and additional photos not posted below, check out hightimbertimes.com.

Pain, because she twisted her ankle (she would return later in the 4th) and because they lost 59-32. It was a tough game for the Lobos who looked fantastic in the Elite Eight series. And just like that my basketball season comes to an end. Click through to view more photos from last nights game.

The thrill of victory the agony of defeat. It all happens on the mat at the Pepsi Center once a year. These photos are the follow up to the previous post about State Wrestling. First up is Tony Peña.

Yellow Barn© Matthew Jonas 2010

The design above is similar to what we ran on the front page of the High Timber Times this week. The story is about the yellow barn that is for sale and how a developer wants to, uh, develop the land. Instead of running a single building mug for the main art I chose a series that shows the character of the barn. A lot of people will pass by without ever stopping to see the intricacies of the structure. Hopefully it will remain in its current form or maybe someone will buy it and restore it. Since we are such a small operation, its nice to be able to help with a little design every once in a while.

It’s been a busy week. I will post more when I get a chance. Until then, I saw this at the Evergreen/Conifer double header basketball game on Friday night. Now that is what I call team spirit.
