Football playoffs are here. Much to my surprise, the games have been played on Saturday afternoons instead of Friday nights. It definitely makes for an easier time shooting. Here’s a few from Columbines win over Highlands Ranch. Enjoy.

A Total Loss

I made this picture at a house fire earlier this week. For a while I had seriously considered living in Evergreen. Then I realized how far away the nearest water supply was in the event of a fire. There is a reason that people keep a “go box” with all their important belongings next to the front door during fire season.

State Cross Country Remote Camera Outakes

I set a remote camera during every race I had to cover at the 2011 CHSAA State Cross Country Championships this year. I had some success and a few failures. Speaking of failures (WARNING: Rant Approaching), CHSAA has once again made covering the finish line nearly impossible for photographers. They continue to insist on having non essential personnel clogging the finish line. It is the most disorganized event I cover each year. I dread having to cover it. I know I’m not alone in this respect. (Rant over) Anyway here are a few select pictures from my remote along with some explanations.
Mr. EHS Competition Rehearsal

Last week I stopped by the Mr. Evergreen High School competition rehearsal to make a few pictures. The lighting in the auditorium at EHS is abysmal. It’s something like ISO 6400, f2.8 at 1/30th in the bright spots. Even with the tough lighting conditions I managed to make a few frames that I liked. Click through for a few more. Thanks for looking.
On Assignment: Dealing With Bad Weather
© Matthew Jonas 2011/Evergreen Newspapers 2011
Last Saturday, Oct. 8, was some of the worst weather I have had to work through in years. It was 40 degrees, windy and raining. Throughout the day, the rain turned into snow then back into rain and finally back into snow. Surprise, surprise, all of my assignments were outside for the day. When I arrived at my first assignment it was immediately clear what the story would be: mud. Instead of a standard feature assignment, it became a giant weather assignment. I laced up my boots, headed into the pumpkin patch and concentrated on finding the muddiest pumpkins and people.

Here’s a few more pictures I made in between assignments in Evergreen and Clear Creek County this week. Enjoy.
