Chatfield Senior High School Swimmer

I meant to post this last week but I never got around to it. I cover a fair amount of swimming during the winter sports season. Its always a challenge to come up with strong swimming pictures when you are limited to what you can see above the water. I think this one is fairly successful for 2 reasons. The first is the drama of the water splashing around the swimmer. The second is the red digital display of the time clock reflected in the swimmers goggles. I almost chose another picture over this one until I saw that small detail.

What a crazy weekend. Lots to do with little time to get it done. The highlight of the weekend was covering Columbine High School winning the 5A football state title. Special thanks to Gabe Christus for letting me borrow his 300. Here are a few of my favorite pictures from the game. Enjoy.

Thunder Valley Motocross

What a weekend! I almost forgot how much fun it is to cover motor sports. I definitely didn’t forget how much work it is. Last weekend was the annual Thunder Valley stop on the AMA circuit. The track is unique for the circuit and presents challenges for the riders. Carved out of the side of the foothills at 6000+ feet in elevation, it is unlike any other. Both riders and bikes had to be adjusted to the conditions. It was clear that some of the traveling press were having trouble adjusting too. More than once, I caught a few photographers sitting outside the track sucking wind and drinking water like they had just finished a 5k. I have to admit that toward the end of the day that I was starting to feel a little winded as well. Covering motocross at Thunder Valley entails a lot of hiking up and down the side of a mountain. That combined with the 95 degree heat, the unique smell of dirt bike exhaust and the lack of shade make for a tough day. Even with all of the obvious challenges I still had a blast. Here’s a collection of photos that I made during the weekend. Enjoy.

Evergreen Rodeo

Boy has it been a while since I posted anything here. It’s not because I didn’t want to. I just haven’t had the time to properly post. Anyway let’s dive into it. Last weekend was the annual Evergreen Rodeo. I only cover about 10 days of rodeo every year but I love shooting it. There is something very raw and true about the sport. It has remained largely untouched by television drama and big corporate money. The access is fantastic. Almost everything is open as long as you don’t get hurt trying to do it. Speaking of getting hurt, the rider and the horse in the first photo were uninjured in the fall.
