2011 CHSAA State Wrestling: Day 1

Off to an interesting start. The first match I was supposed to photograph was over before it started. Due to a questionable medical call, a 3A heavy weight wrestler from Clear Creek High School was disqualified. I’m not a doctor but to me the injury in question was nothing but mat burn. The medical personnel for CHSAA though it might have been something more serious. It’s tough break for the kid, who is a senior, and will now miss his last opportunity to wrestle.

One of the best parts of the state tournament is not the action on the mat but the people I get to see that work at other publications across the state. It’s kind of a big PJ reunion. In particular many of the people that I get to see are my former classmates from Metro State or former interns. So far this year I have run into Dawn Madura, Gabe Christus, Steve Stoner (for about 5 seconds before he left), Josh Buck (for one heavy weight match at 10:30pm) and Heather Long-Name-Burke or Smith or whatever her last name is this week (I’m kidding, I still like ya.)

As with any large event coverage, you have to think on your feet and quickly solve problems as they come up. This year I learned how many times you can fire a 580EX II  before it overheats and shuts off. I also learned that the EOS 1D Mark III I recently purchased needs a trip to Canon for service. I couldn’t get the damn thing to lock focus on anything the entire day. Almost every photo I shot with it is OOF. I will be bringing both Mark II Ns today.

After 14 matches I am down to 8 today. That is kind of a nice change compared to years past where I would have 20+ matches to cover. The problem with the coverage is that they wrestle 10 mats at a time. So there is a very good chance that 2 matches I need to cover will be taking place simultaneously. As you can see from the photo above showing warm ups before the matches, it gets a little crowded on the floor. Overall, I didn’t really come up with any stand out images from the first day. I also realized that I shot everything just a little too tight. I will work on that today.
