The other day I was sitting in the office listening to the police/fire scanner when I heard a dispatcher talk about a “hazmat operation” going on in Longmont. I didn’t hear much traffic after that but I decided to go check it out anyway. Boy was I surprised with what I found when I arrived on scene.
The Longmont Police were investigating the death of a 6-year-old girl. The thing that stood out to me was not only the girls age but also the full hazardous materials response to the scene. I quickly found a detective that I recognized and asked him what we needed to know and if there was an immediate threat to the public. He explained to me that there was no immediate threat to the public but they were taking extra precautions to investigate the scene because the cause of death was possibly related to an illness or virus. Wow. Never a dull moment in photojournalism.
