State Cross Country Remote Camera Outakes

I set a remote camera during every race I had to cover at the 2011 CHSAA State Cross Country Championships this year. I had some success and a few failures. Speaking of failures (WARNING: Rant Approaching), CHSAA has once again made covering the finish line nearly impossible for photographers. They continue to insist on having non essential personnel clogging the finish line. It is the most disorganized event I cover each year. I dread having to cover it. I know I’m not alone in this respect. (Rant over) Anyway here are a few select pictures from my remote along with some explanations.

Fall Football Preview Portraits

About 6 months ago our sports editor, Michael Hicks, came to me with an idea for the fall. He wanted to put together a multi-page, pull out section filled with previews for the fall high school football season. I was immediately on board. It has been a long time since we had tackled anything this big. Newspapers with a circulation size as small as ours do not get to work on projects like this often. As everyone is well aware, the newspaper business is a little unstable right now. With that instability comes budget cuts and physical page count and size reductions. Getting a full color, multi-page section is a difficult pill to swallow for most publishers, especially if there is a lack of committed advertising to offset the cost.

Favorite Basketball Photos From the 2010/2011 Season

Basketball season has come to an end. All of the teams we cover have been eliminated from the playoffs. It was a long season. I must have shot 30 games this year. Out of those 30 games only a couple of them were not lit. My light kit (blogged about here) worked great for most assignments. Every year my timing gets better and I enjoy the challenge of lighting different gyms more and more. I have selected a few of my favorite pictures from this season. You can see a few more over at my sportsshooter.com member page here. Thanks for looking.

Don’t Fight the Light

© Matthew Jonas 2011/Evergreen Newspapers 2011

“Don’t fight the light,” was a phrase that I heard many times from my photojournalism instructors in college. It is a constant battle for photojournalists. We are forced to make pictures in situations that send CCDs scrambling for brighter fields. The picture above is from a situation many will face. Go to the local rec center and make pictures of a high school swimmer for a sports feature. Seems like a simple assignment. However, it quickly turns from simple to complicated.

Dakota Ridge Hogback Brush Fire

© Matthew Jonas 2010/Evergreen Newspapers 2010

Today while I was on the way to another assignment I got a call from one of our reporters about a brush fire in Morrison. I could see the smoke when I was driving down from the Canyon Courier office. When I got to Morrison it was clear that I would not be able to access the road that I needed to. Morrison Police had already blocked the road access to anyone except fire fighters. So I drove up Morrison Road towards the Soda Lakes and pulled over. I was able to make a few frames that showed the size of the fire as well as a couple of details of the smoke. Being that far away is not ideal but it is still something different than what any of the TV stations or other papers in town had. It’s days like this that give me a reason to carry a 1.4x and 2.ox converter in my bag. Read the official story about it at the Columbine Courier, Canyon Courier or High Timber Times.
