2011 CHSAA State Wrestling: Day 1

Off to an interesting start. The first match I was supposed to photograph was over before it started. Due to a questionable medical call, a 3A heavy weight wrestler from Clear Creek High School was disqualified. I’m not a doctor but to me the injury in question was nothing but mat burn. The medical personnel for CHSAA though it might have been something more serious. It’s tough break for the kid, who is a senior, and will now miss his last opportunity to wrestle.

2011 CHSAA State Wrestling

This weekend is the annual CHSAA State Wrestling Tournament at the Pepsi Center in Denver. As usual, I will have more schools and athletes to cover than I realistically have time for. However, I am going to try to post as much as I can about it on the blog all weekend long. So stay tuned and if you are working at the Pepsi Center this weekend, stop by to say hi.

Trail of Lights

Shooting holiday lights can be a challenge. I always like to include a human element in my pictures and with a long exposure it can be difficult to make a picture without motion blur. I saw the couple in the photo above attempting to shoot self portraits at the Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield on Saturday and it gave me an idea. To get a proper exposure for the lights I would need a long exposure. This gave me a window of opportunity to catch the flash from the couple’s camera and use it as fill to illuminate them in front of the lights. It took a couple of frames but I managed to time it right to make the picture above.

Covering the 2010 Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals

After several hours I was tired, covered in oil and smelled like burnt rubber. I have to admit, it was a pretty good time. The 2010 Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals came to Bandimere Speedway last weekend. We have covered it in the past but not for some time. This year, with the help of an enthusiastic new sports editor, we decided to go all out and cover the entire weekend. Well, at least he did. With 4 other papers to shoot for and numerous weekend assignments I only managed to make it to the finals on Sunday. Even one day was a lot of work and with an average track temperature of 115 degrees the conditions were not exactly comfortable to work in.

Favorite Photo of The Week 11/7

This is a photo I made during the Democratic National Convention in Denver in 2008. I think this is a photo that everyone made that day. How could you not? It was a photo that really made sense after nearly a week of covering the protests, parties and presentations. A typical Colorado fall sunset. There is a great contrast of ideas going on in this image. On one hand you have the beautiful, organic clouds and sunset and on the other hand you have the sterile, hard industrial shapes of police in riot gear. Out of all of the days that I covered protests this was the day that I thought I was going to get maced. It never happened and the next night Barack Obama took the stage in front of more than 80,000 people to accept the nomination. It was a great experience and I learned a lot working with many great photojournalists.
