What a week! In the span of 3 days I covered a bomb found in a mall, a wildfire and a structure fire. My job is never boring that is for sure. Here’s a collection of pictures from the chaos. The photo above and the following 2 are from the Myers Gulch house fire.

Raw Video: Myers Gulch Road House Fire

I shot this video at a structure fire on the morning of April 22, 2011. I was actually on my way up to shoot a follow up picture at another fire when I heard about this one on my public safety scanner. I will post a couple of photos from the chaos of last weekend when I get a chance. For now, take a look at the video.

I shoot a lot of environmental portraits and have written about it before. Generally I choose to light a portrait and not include the gear that I use to do it with in the actual picture. I’m not sure where I got the idea or what I was looking at that gave me the inspiration but this time I decided to leave it in. I’m still not sure if I like it or not but think I am going to run it this week as the main photo in a supplemental publication we have called Upslope.

U.S. 285 Rock Slide Photos

© Matthew Jonas 2010/Evergreen Newspapers 2010

What an interesting way to start the weekend. Last night a 40 ton boulder slid from a steep embankment and landed on U.S. 285 near Indian Hills. Its absolutely amazing that this boulder didn’t land on a car traveling southbound. It took up 2 lanes and closed the highway for several hours. The boulder which was roughly 20 feet in diameter was eventually pushed from the road by 2 large front end loaders. The highway was re-opened but there is still a lot of clean up work taking place. I stopped by this morning in the awesome Colorado spring weather to get a couple of shots to go with our story.

Pond Hockey

© Matthew Jonas 2010/Evergreen Newspapers 2010

The other day while on assignment, I had one of those moments that makes me appreciate what I do for a living. I got up early to make pictures of a group of devoted hockey players. They get together on weekends to play hockey on a small sheet of ice on a pond in Indian Hills. It was the last day of their “season” and they invited me out. It was a fun assignment. I made a some nice pictures and met some great people. See you guys next year.
