Weather Art

Like any good photojournalist, after a good snow storm, you make weather feature pictures where ever you can. Covering the same area for the last 4 years has its advantages – you have a mental address book of all the good sledding areas. I started off going to the areas I knew would produce good pictures but I also kept an eye out for a few new unique locations along the way. It worked out pretty well. Special thanks to my Subaru for driving me through areas that my last car would have easily given up in. Click through for more pictures. Enjoy.

One From This Weekend

© Matthew Jonas 2011/Evergreen Newspapers 2011

I made this picture on Friday night at Evergreen High School. That gym is one of my favorites to light. I’ll take good action and good color over ISO 3200 and a motor drive any day. This picture was made using techniques learned from strobist.com. Speaking of the strobist, David Hobby himself will be visiting Denver on March 22, 2011 along with Joe McNally on the flash bus tour. If you are looking for a good (cheap) workshop that will most likely be packed full of information about getting your flash off of your camera this is it.

Friday Night Darkness (Lights?)

Fall sports started a couple of weeks ago and I have been busy Friday nights ever since. For many of us that means high school football. This is a time of year that I both look forward to and dread. The weather is finally cooling off and the days are becoming shorter. Unfortunately that means that the sun sets earlier and with game times starting around 7pm I am forced to deal with awful stadium lights (hence the phrase Friday Night Lights). This used to mean that I had to break out the flash-bracket-battery-pack-monopod contraption in order to stop action and get a decent exposure. Not anymore. I recently acquired a Canon EOS 7D which I have blogged about here and there. With fast lenses (f2.8 or better) and lower noise higher ISOs, football has become fun to shoot again.

The Details of State Track and Field

© Matthew Jonas 2010

I had a couple of hours in between some of the races that I needed to cover at the 2010 State Track and Field Championships so I decided to shoot a little project. I wandered around Jeffco Stadium shooting detail shots of various track and field events in the late afternoon light. It may not be great stuff but it kept me entertained on the first of three 12 hour days ahead of me covering track. Check it out.

Senior Prom

© Matthew Jonas 2010/Evergreen Newspapers 2010

On Saturday, Jefferson County student council members put together their 6th annual “Senior Prom” at Dakota Ridge High School. They had a good turnout even with the snow and I made a couple of good frames for the paper.
