On Sunday, June 2, 2013 my alarm went off at 5AM. I was headed to Frederick to follow a hot air balloon pilot from take off to landing. This was a photo essay I had been wanting to work on for some time. I was interested in finding a pilot who was passionate about flying and it took some time to find a source that wasn’t a commercial pilot. When I did finally find some one, I found exactly the person I needed.
I shot this video at a structure fire on the morning of April 22, 2011. I was actually on my way up to shoot a follow up picture at another fire when I heard about this one on my public safety scanner. I will post a couple of photos from the chaos of last weekend when I get a chance. For now, take a look at the video.

Web video is here to stay. And with the roll out of the new web platform I mentioned previously, we have been tasked with creating video content for all of our publications. I really want this to work out for us but I have made it clear to our editorial management that this will not be a “quantity versus quality” endeavor. Not every story will include video. I set our goals at 1 video per week, per paper. So basically I will probably end up cutting together 4 videos a week. It’s not going to be easy. But I like a challenge.
Speaking of challenges, the company actually purchased video cameras for the staff. In a time of furlough days, pay cuts and expense reductions it was a nice surprise. However, (let’s face it there is always a however) with the limited budget the equipment purchased was not the Canon XH-A1s and Sennheiser EW G3s that we would have liked. Instead we were given the Kodak Zi8 pocket video cameras and Audio-Technica wired lavaliere mics. The photo above shows the camera and mic along with my haggard Think Tank Photo Trim Changer.
Here is another video. This time it appears to have been shot by what I assume to be professional photographers. Really nice stuff. Although, I am sure the RIAA would love to know whether they licensed the music that accompanies the video. I am a little concerned about the lack of natural sound that I am seeing in some of the videos. I am planning on getting a video capable DSLR soon and will use it for editorial (interviews, etc.) work so I would like to hear more audio. Shot with a Canon 7D. Any way, check it out
UPDATED: I finally figured out what I was doing wrong in the embedding code, so now I can embed the video in the post itself. No more linking out of the blog!
I am repeatedly blown away by the kind of stuff amateur photographers are shooting with video enabled DSLRs. The video above is an example of the type of stuff I am talking about. Shot with a Canon 7D. Just amazing.
